Bio Tank Africa Opens Nakuru Branch To Address County’s Growing Sanitation Deficit

NAKURU, 10th April 2026 — Bio Tank Africa today officially opened its Nakuru branch — its first regional office outside the Nairobi metropolitan area — at Shayona Business Centre, Nakuru. The launch also marked the unveiling of a refreshed brand identity and the rollout of the Kuwa Mbele Campaign, the company’s platform for community education and trade partnerships across the region.

The event was officiated by Dr. Nelson Maara, County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources.

The expansion comes at a critical moment for Nakuru County. Nakuru is one of Kenya’s fastest-growing counties, with its construction and housing sectors growing at approximately 5.5% annually. However, fewer than 4 in every 100 residents are connected to a sewerage system, and over 65% of human waste goes untreated. For the households, fundis, and developers driving the county’s construction boom, safe and affordable sanitation has remained out of reach.

This challenge is not unique to Nakuru. Across Kenya, sewer connectivity remains limited, with most households relying on on-site sanitation systems. When these systems are poorly designed or unmanaged, they contribute to environmental pollution, disease outbreaks, and significant economic losses through healthcare costs and reduced productivity. Thousands of Kenyans continue to lose their lives each year to sanitation and hygiene-related illnesses—outcomes that are largely preventable.

Bio Tank Africa’s entry into the market directly addresses this gap, offering affordable biodigesters and sanitation products accessible to households, fundis, contractors, and developers.

Speaking during the launch, Edwin Kirugo, Founder and General Manager of Bio Tank Africa, said the company’s entry into Nakuru is grounded in a reality many Kenyans understand.

“Many Kenyans build where they own land. We do not wait for infrastructure—we go ahead of it. That is the Kenyan spirit. But it also creates a gap, especially in sanitation, and that is the gap we are here to help address.”

Kirugo noted that while government continues to invest in infrastructure, demand is growing faster than systems can keep up.

“We are not here to replace government—we are here to complement and support. Our focus is simple: practical, affordable solutions that people can use where they are.”

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Nelson Maara welcomed the investment and emphasized the role of partnerships in expanding access to sanitation:

“Nakuru County is committed to ensuring every resident has access to safe and dignified sanitation. We welcome partners who are providing practical solutions that complement government efforts and help us move closer to universal access.”

Founded in 2018, Bio Tank Africa began when Edwin Kirugo, while building his own home, found that Kenya’s available septic solutions were outdated and unaffordable for middle-income families. He developed a better alternative — first a modified masonry system, then an affordable plastic biodigester — and built a company around it. Bio Tank Africa now operates branches in Thika, Kitengela, and Ruiru, with further expansion planned for Kisumu, Meru, and Mombasa.

The Nakuru launch drew construction and plumbing industry players, local leaders, and community stakeholders, underscoring the alignment between Bio Tank Africa’s expansion and the county’s own sanitation and infrastructure agenda.
